The Life and Legacy of Nora Lee Bethea
We celebrate her bravery. her
fear, and her strength. We celebrate her weakness, her tolerance, and her
patience. We celebrate her tears, her joy, and her sorrow. We celebrate her gentleness,
her honesty, and her kindness. We celebrate her teaching, and her wisdom. We
celebrate her living, and her death.
Nora Lee Bethea was the bravest women we have ever known. A fearless woman who when faced with hard situations, simply endured. She was confident in whom she was and what she believed in, and she has been an encouragement, not only to her family, but to others as well. She was also the strongest woman we have known. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. And Nora was praised because she did fear the Lord.
Nora didn’t mind when people considered her weak. She knew that God’s power showed up when she was weak. One of her favorite verses in the bible was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. And the power of Christ did rest upon her and she showed this in her tolerance.
She didn’t demand that people saw things her way. She respected everyone’s opinion. She was a woman of peace. She cried many tears. But she took comfort in knowing that the Lord would wipe away every single one of them.
Nora always forgave. And she taught her children to forgive, instructing them to get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, and every form of malice. She encouraged her children to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you, because love hides a multitude of sin.
Nora was a gentle woman. Everybody knew of her gentleness. She was a gentle soul. Her love of God compelled her to never speak evil of anyone. She avoided arguing. She practiced gentleness and courtesy toward all people.
She was honest. She honestly loved all of her children. And she spoke truth to power. Nora loved the Lord with all of her heart and soul and she knew full well that lying lips were an abomination to the Lord, and because she wanted to please the Lord, she practiced honesty.
There was no one kinder than Nora Lee Bethea. She was compassionate. She knew about your struggles because she had also struggled. She often put herself in the shoes of others, never judging, but gently encouraging you to stay the course.
We celebrate her joy because, the joy of the Lord was the strength of Nora. Her heart was always glad, and her whole being rejoiced because she knew that she dwelt in the security of the Lord. But it is also for that reason that we celebrate her sorrow because she only had to endure her pain for a night, because her joy came in the morning.
Nora made it her ambition to lead a quiet life. She knew that it was better to have one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with turmoil. She knew how to be content with her circumstances. Nora could do all this through Him who gave her strength, and she taught everyone she knew, through example, how to do all things through Him who gives us strength.
In Memory of Nora, we continue her Spiritual Legacy of Love, Faith and Charity. We are keeping her legacy alive by continuing to teach tolerance through love of God. Faith through knowledge of God. And finally, Goodwill through Obedience to God.
